Modelled by Peter Gee and issued in 1990 and 1991, the series turns the grand society portraits of the 18th-century English painter Thomas Gainsborough into fine bone china. Each figure was produced as a limited edition of only 5,000.

The four figures are modelled after Gainsborough’s full-length portraits of fashionable aristocratic women. Each one captures the sweeping gowns, poised stances and refined elegance of the originals. Among the paintings that inspired the series is Gainsborough’s portrait of the Honourable Frances Duncombe, painted around 1777 and now in the Frick Collection in New York. Displayed together, the four make an impressive group, and complete sets are much harder to find than single figures.

Included in the set:

Mary Countess of Howe HN3007, issued 1990, 9.25 in (23.5 cm)

Sophia Charlotte Lady Sheffield HN3008, issued 1991, 10 in (25.4 cm)

Hon.
