Chinese Famille Verte Porcelain Charger — Figural & Dragon Decoration, Turquoise Ground, Seal Mark, 20th Century
A decorative and richly painted Chinese porcelain charger, 12 inches in diameter, decorated in the famille verte palette against a distinctive turquoise-blue ground. The piece is a strong example of the figural and narrative decorative tradition that has long made Chinese export porcelain so sought after by Western collectors.
The interior is arranged in a classic medallion-and-panel composition. The central roundel depicts an elegant court scene — a robed female figure standing before a garden pavilion with rockwork and plantings — enclosed within a shaped cloud border. Surrounding this are alternating panels of additional figural scenes showing scholars, attendants, and outdoor activities, separated by a vibrant ground densely filled with writhing dragons, lotus flowers, and stylized clouds in yellow, green, and orange against the turquoise field. The wide border carries a geometric diaper pattern interspersed with further floral and figural reserves. The back is decorated with scattered iron-red and green floral sprigs and carries a red seal mark in the Chinese style.
A retailer's label from Duncan Robertson Limited is present on the base — a well-known Canadian fine china and gift retailer — placing this piece firmly in the mid-to-late 20th century export trade. The plate is in excellent condition, free of chips or cracks, and displays beautifully on the included black lacquer stand.
An attractive and colourful display piece with genuine decorative character.
