Doulton Burslem Blue Children Vase, Victorian Children Scene

This charming and collectible vase was produced at Doulton's Burslem factory prior to 1902, as confirmed by the earlier Doulton Burslem England backstamp predating the Royal designation. Measuring 3.25 inches tall and 4.75 inches wide, the piece is executed in the celebrated Blue Children series — one of Doulton's most enduringly popular decorating styles, depicting Victorian children in outdoor scenes rendered in soft blue and white against a deep cobalt ground.

The vase presents an unusual and distinctive lobed form with four scroll feet, small gilt stub handles at the shoulder, and a rectangular gilt-rimmed opening — a shape less commonly encountered in the Blue Children series than standard vase and plate forms, adding particular interest for the dedicated collector. The painted scene depicts two young children in bonnets and winter dress, rendered with the characteristic sfumato technique in which figures emerge softly from the atmospheric cobalt ground rather than sitting as flat painted images against it.

This vase is in mint condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or restoration. The gilt rim and stub handles remain bright and intact. Early Blue Children pieces bearing the pre-Royal Doulton Burslem backstamp are less frequently encountered than later production, and the combination of an uncommon form with a well-executed figural scene in this state of preservation makes this an attractive addition to any serious Doulton collection.
