Doulton Burslem Cabinet Plate, Cobalt Blue Botanical & Gilt
This exceptional cabinet plate was produced at Doulton's Burslem factory and registered with the UK Design Registry in 1888, as confirmed by the registration number Rd No 72067 stamped on the reverse alongside the Doulton Burslem England backstamp. At 9 inches in diameter with a scalloped gilt rim, this is among the most precisely dateable pieces of Doulton Burslem art pottery available to collectors, the registration number providing documentary evidence of its late Victorian origins.
The plate is decorated with a central botanical composition featuring water lily or lotus blooms and foliage rendered in cobalt blue with elaborate gilt detailing picking out every petal edge, leaf vein and stem — a premium decorating technique requiring considerable skill and time. The wide border carries dense gilt fern fronds and trailing floral sprays on a warm cream ground, framed by the scalloped gilt rim. The overall effect is one of considerable richness and refinement, consistent with Doulton's cabinet and display wares produced for the upper domestic market of the 1880s.
This plate is in mint condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or restoration. The gilt border and central decoration remain exceptionally bright and crisp for a piece of this age, with no rubbing or wear to the elaborate gilded surfaces. Documented Doulton Burslem pieces with confirmed registration dates are increasingly sought by serious collectors and represent a tangible connection to the factory's pre-Royal Victorian production.
