Doulton Burslem Ewer, Cobalt Blue Iris & Heavy Gilt, 12 Inches, c.1890–1910

Sale price$299.95 CAD

This impressive ewer was produced at Royal Doulton's Burslem factory during the late Victorian and Edwardian period, dating to approximately 1890–1910 as indicated by the Burslem England backstamp. Standing 12 inches tall, the piece exemplifies the ambitious decorative pottery for which Doulton Burslem became internationally celebrated during this era, combining skilled hand painting with elaborate gilded ornament on an elegant classical form.

The ewer presents a slender ovoid body rising from a gilded pedestal foot to a graceful elongated neck with a shaped pouring lip and sweeping handle. The body features boldly painted cobalt blue iris blooms and foliage against a warm mottled brown and buff ground, rendered with the confident brushwork characteristic of Doulton's Burslem decorating department. The neck, foot, handle and rim are lavishly adorned with dense gilt foliate scrollwork on a deep cobalt ground — a level of gilding associated with Doulton's premium production intended for exhibition and upscale retail.

This ewer is in mint condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or restoration. The gilding remains exceptionally bright and largely unworn, which is rare in pieces of this age, as the gilt on Doulton ewers of this type typically shows handling wear at the handle join, spout and foot rim. A surviving example in this state of preservation represents a genuine find for the serious collector.

This piece ships from Waterloo, Ontario. Canadians pay no customs or import fees. International buyers please inquire for a shipping quote before purchasing.
