Doulton Burslem Iris Ewer, Cobalt Blue & Gilt Floral, Globular Form
This exceptional globular ewer was produced at Doulton's Burslem factory during the late Victorian period, bearing the Doulton Burslem England backstamp and shape number X4526. Standing 7.5 inches tall with a dramatically scrolled spout and squared handle, the piece represents the most elaborate example within this iris decorating series, distinguished by gilt highlighting applied directly within the iris petals themselves — a more labour-intensive treatment than the standard cobalt and buff ground work seen across the group.
The generous spherical body features boldly painted cobalt blue iris blooms with gold detailing picking out the petal veining and stamens against the characteristic mottled buff and white ground. The upper section, spout and handle are finished in deep cobalt bearing dense gilt scrollwork of exceptional quality. A painter's initial mark "H" is recorded on the base alongside the factory backstamp, identifying this as the work of a named Burslem decorator.
This ewer is in mint condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or restoration. The gilt detailing within the iris decoration remains crisp and bright, which is particularly notable given the delicacy of this technique. Pieces from this iris series with internal gilt flower decoration represent the premium tier of Burslem's cobalt and buff production and are seldom encountered in this state of preservation.
