Doulton Burslem Twin-Handled Amphora Vase, Cobalt Iris & Gilt Bird Medallion
This exceptional twin-handled amphora vase was produced at Doulton's Burslem factory prior to 1902, as confirmed by the earlier Doulton Burslem England backstamp predating the Royal designation granted by King Edward VII. Standing 10 inches tall, the piece represents the pinnacle of Burslem's decorative output during the late Victorian period, combining two distinct decorative treatments on a single harmonious form.
The elongated neck and flared rim are decorated in the Japanese-influenced manner fashionable at Burslem during this period — a deep cobalt ground bearing dense gilt floral lattice interrupted by a circular medallion containing a painted bird among branches, a motif drawn directly from the Aesthetic Movement's enthusiasm for Japanese design. The twin handles are finished in cobalt with gilt highlights. The generous ovoid body transitions to the softer mottled buff and brown ground of the iris series, with boldly painted cobalt blue iris blooms rendered in the fluid, confident brushwork consistent across this group of pieces.
This vase is in excellent condition with the gilding remaining bright and the painted decoration vivid. A painter's identification mark is present on the base alongside the factory backstamp, consistent with Burslem's practice of recording individual decorators' contributions. The pre-1902 dating makes this among the earliest pieces in the iris series group, adding historical interest for the dedicated collector.
