Doulton Lambeth Boer War Soldier — John Broad, circa 1901
One of the most significant and collectible figures ever produced at the Doulton Lambeth pottery, this salt-glazed stoneware Boer War soldier represents the pinnacle of late Victorian British ceramic sculpture.
Modelled by John Broad — one of Doulton Lambeth's most celebrated artists — this heroic figure was created circa 1901 to commemorate British forces in the South African campaign. Broad depicted the soldier in the new khaki uniform adopted specifically for the Boer War, making this piece a remarkable document of British military and social history as much as a work of decorative art.
Standing approximately 11¾ inches tall on a naturalistic grassy mound base, the figure retains exceptional detail in the richly coloured salt glaze finish, characteristic of Doulton Lambeth's finest stoneware production. The incised "JB" artist mark and impressed Doulton Lambeth factory backstamp confirm authenticity.
This figure was so admired that it directly inspired a young Leslie Harradine — who would go on to become Royal Doulton's most beloved figurine sculptor — when he joined the Lambeth pottery in 1902. Its influence on the entire Royal Doulton figurine tradition cannot be overstated.
Pieces of this quality, condition, and historical significance rarely come to market.
