Pair of Chinese Famille Rose Porcelain Vases with Hardwood Stands — Floral Enamels, Seal Mark, 20th Century Export Ware
A handsome and decorative pair of Chinese famille rose porcelain vases, each mounted on its original fitted hardwood stand. Standing 13½ inches without the base and a full 15 inches with it, and measuring 7 inches at the widest point, these are substantial pieces with genuine presence on a shelf or console.
Each vase is painted in the classic famille rose palette — soft pinks, greens, white, and accents of blue and yellow — with an all-over design of peonies, chrysanthemums, prunus blossom, and leafy branches covering the body from shoulder to foot. The flared trumpet neck and moulded elephant-head handles in celadon green are characteristic of a well-established export form produced throughout the 20th century for Western and overseas Chinese markets. The decoration is confidently executed and the enamel colours remain bright and unfaded.
The base of each vase carries a red seal mark in iron-red enamel within a square border — a decorative reign mark in the traditional style, as was standard practice on quality export porcelain of this period. The unglazed footrim shows honest age and use consistent with mid-to-late 20th century production. Both vases are free of chips or cracks. The fitted hardwood stands are a nice original accompaniment and add considerably to the display quality of the pair.
A versatile and attractive pair — equally at home in a traditional interior, a chinoiserie-influenced room, or as a focal point in a more eclectic setting. Priced as a pair with stands included.
