Royal Doulton Arundel Biscuit Barrel, Cobalt Blue Rose & Gilt, Silver Plate Mounts & Sterling Spoon, c.1902–1915
This charming biscuit barrel was produced at Royal Doulton's Burslem factory in the Edwardian period, decorated in the named Arundel pattern — pattern number A4803 — featuring large cobalt blue rose blooms and foliage against the characteristic mottled buff and white ground. Standing 7 inches tall to the top of the bail handle, the piece retains its original silver plate mounts comprising a hinged lid with finial, swing bail handle, and rim collar, accompanied by a sterling silver spoon — a rare survival of the complete original presentation.
The Arundel pattern is among Doulton's most richly decorative rose designs of the Edwardian period, the large full-petalled cobalt blooms painted with soft impressionistic brushwork across the generous cylindrical body. The silver plate mounts show the natural patina of age consistent with a piece of this period, complementing rather than detracting from the overall character of the piece.
The ceramic body is in good condition with minor crazing to the base — a common and expected characteristic in earthenware of this age that does not affect the appearance or structural integrity of the piece. The decorated surfaces and Arundel rose decoration remain vivid and unfaded. Complete biscuit barrels with original silver plate mounts and accompanying sterling silver spoon are seldom encountered intact, as the components have typically been separated over the course of a century of domestic use.
