Royal Doulton Burslem Blue Chrysanthemum Vase Signed J. Hancock c.1895–1902

Sale price$495.00 CAD

This exceptional vase was produced at the Doulton Burslem factory in Staffordshire, England, during the final years of the nineteenth century, dating to approximately 1895–1902 as confirmed by the printed brown Doulton Burslem England cartouche mark — a stamp used exclusively before the firm received its Royal Warrant in 1902. The piece bears the hand-painted signature of John Hancock, one of the most accomplished decorating artists working at Burslem during this period, whose floral work on blue grounds is among the most admired of the late Victorian studio output.

The vase stands 9.25 inches tall in a graceful elongated form with a bulbous base (3.5") tapering to a slender neck ( 1"), a shape that showcases the decoration to full advantage. The body is painted in a rich periwinkle-to-cobalt blue ground, across which large white chrysanthemum blooms are rendered with confident, painterly brushwork in Hancock's characteristic style. The neck is banded with an elaborate arabesque pattern in bright gilding that remains fully intact with no wear — an increasingly rare condition in pieces of this age.

Signed Doulton Burslem vases attributable to named studio artists represent a small and increasingly sought-after segment of the Victorian ceramics market. John Hancock's signature elevates this piece well above anonymous production ware, and the combination of pre-Royal Doulton dating, artist attribution, mint condition, and intact gilding makes this a particularly strong example. Pieces of this quality and provenance appear infrequently on the market.
