Royal Doulton Burslem Iris Pilgrim Flask, Cobalt Blue & Gilt, Twin Handles
This compact twin-handled pilgrim flask was produced at Royal Doulton's Burslem factory in the Edwardian period, as confirmed by the Royal Doulton England backstamp. Standing 5.5 inches tall in a squat compressed form with twin loop handles flanking a narrow gilt-rimmed neck, the piece is among the more distinctive shapes produced within Doulton's cobalt iris decorating series, its low centre of gravity and broad decorated face making it an exceptionally displayable piece.
The body carries the characteristic mottled buff and white ground of the series, with sweeping cobalt blue iris foliage and blooms painted across the full face in the bold, fluid manner consistent throughout this group. The neck is finished in deep cobalt with gilt foliate scrollwork, and a painter's identification mark is present on the base consistent with other pieces in the series.
This flask is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or restoration to the piece itself. Minor crazing is present to the base — a common and expected characteristic in earthenware of this age that does not affect the appearance or structural integrity of the piece. The decorated surfaces and gilding remain in excellent order.
