Royal Doulton Burslem Ribbed Vase, Cobalt Blue & Gilt Lotus
This distinctive vase was produced at Royal Doulton's Burslem factory in the Edwardian period, bearing the Royal Doulton England backstamp with pattern number A447. Standing 5.5 inches tall and 6 inches in diameter, the piece is immediately distinguished by its moulded vertically ribbed body — a relief form that adds tactile dimension and catches light across the decorated surfaces in a way flat-bodied vases cannot replicate.
The lower body carries sweeping cobalt blue leaf and feather forms painted boldly across the fluted ribs against the characteristic mottled buff and white ground, the broad confident brushwork giving the decoration a strongly graphic, almost Art Nouveau quality. The shoulder transitions to a deep cobalt band bearing elaborate gilt botanical decoration including finely detailed sunflower and lotus medallions with intricate filigree centres, surrounded by trailing gilt foliage — a level of gilded ornament consistent with Doulton's premium Edwardian production.
This vase is in mint condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or restoration. The gilt shoulder decoration remains exceptionally crisp and the moulded ribbed edges — typically the most vulnerable point on relief-bodied pieces — are completely intact. The combination of an unusual moulded form with bold underglaze decoration and fine gilt work makes this one of the more visually distinctive pieces available from the Burslem art pottery period.
