Annabella HN1871, A Royal Doulton Figurine

Sale price$600.00 CAD Regular price$850.00 CAD

Royal Doulton's Annabella HN1871 was designed by Leslie Harradine and issued between 1938 and 1949 — a production window that spans the final years of peacetime England and the whole of the wartime period, lending this figurine a particular historical resonance. Harradine was the most prolific and arguably the most gifted of all Doulton's figurine modellers, responsible for an extraordinary proportion of the classic lady figurines that define the collector market to this day. Annabella is among his more intimate subjects: a figure conceived with the quiet elegance and careful attention to feminine detail that made his work so consistently admired. The eleven-year production run, cut short with the 1949 retirement, ensures that HN1871 is a piece that rewards patient searching.

Standing approximately 5.25 inches (13.5 cm) tall, Annabella is presented in a pink floral and green colourway — a palette typical of the warm, garden-party sensibility that characterised Harradine's lady figurines of the late 1930s. The modelling is precise without being fussy, the costume rendered with the kind of relaxed confidence that comes only from a sculptor working at the height of his powers. At this scale, every detail counts — the fall of the dress, the tilt of the head, the delicacy of the hand and face — and Harradine delivers on each. The glaze work is characteristic of the Burslem studios in this period: rich in tone, carefully controlled, and aged to a warmth that no modern reproduction can replicate.

Annabella HN1871 belongs to a cluster of Harradine designs from the late 1930s that represent some of the most refined work of his career. Pieces issued immediately before the war and retired in the late 1940s occupy a distinct and undervalued segment of the Doulton collecting spectrum — scarce enough to be genuinely difficult to source in mint condition, but not yet commanding the premium of the very early HN numbers. Collectors who focus on Harradine's output, or who are building a representative survey of the pre-1950 lady figurine range, will recognise HN1871 as a gap-filler of real significance.

This example is offered in mint condition, free from chips, cracks, crazing, or restoration of any kind. The backstamp and colourway are fully consistent with authenticated Doulton production of the 1938–1949 period. Enquiries regarding condition details, provenance, or shipping arrangements are always welcome — Annabella HN1871 is the sort of piece that merits a closer look from any serious student of the Harradine canon.
