Royal Doulton Figurine Lady & The Unicorn HN2825

Sale price$950.00 CAD Regular price$1,250.00 CAD

Lady and the Unicorn (HN2825) was designed by Robert Jefferson and issued by Royal Doulton in 1982 as part of the Myths and Maidens series, standing 8.75 inches tall in a worldwide limited edition of just 300 pieces. The series drew on classical mythology and medieval allegory to pair female figures with their symbolic animal companions, each edition strictly limited and individually numbered, with moulds retired on completion.

The unicorn carried deep symbolic weight in medieval tradition — a creature of ferocity and purity that legend held could only be tamed in the presence of a virgin. Jefferson translates this mythology into porcelain with characteristic precision, the maiden and unicorn rendered with the hand-painted detail and 22-carat gold embellishment that defined his approach throughout the Myths and Maidens series. Jefferson's originals were demanding to recreate, requiring multiple mould components and exacting paintwork to capture every nuance of his sculptural vision.

At an edition ceiling of 300 pieces worldwide, Lady and the Unicorn was scarce from the day it closed. Decades on, locating a numbered example in excellent condition is a serious undertaking — the Myths and Maidens series as a whole has held its collectibility precisely because Jefferson produced so few of each subject and the standard of execution was uncompromising.
