Royal Doulton Figurine Magic Dragon HN2977
Magic Dragon (HN2977) was modelled by Adrian Hughes and issued by Royal Doulton from 1983 to 1986, standing 4.75 inches tall as part of the Enchantment Collection. Rendered in cream ivory bone china, the piece presents a compact, whimsical dragon with the characteristic charm Hughes brought to the Enchantment range — a creature more delightfully fantastical than fearsome, at home in a world of fairy tales rather than epic mythology.
The Enchantment Collection occupied a distinctive corner of Royal Doulton's output in the 1980s, gathering together figures of elves, fairies, dragons and other magical subjects under a single imaginative umbrella. Hughes, who joined Doulton in 1980, proved a natural fit for the series, bringing a sculptor's instinct for character to subjects that could easily have tipped into the merely decorative. Magic Dragon benefits from that sensibility — the modelling has personality.
The cream colourway is the sole production version recorded in the Charlton Standard Catalogue, making polychrome examples — which occasionally surface — a point of genuine collector interest. At just four years of production before retirement in 1986, Magic Dragon is among the shorter-run Enchantment pieces, and the combination of limited availability, a compact footprint, and subject matter that appeals well beyond the traditional Doulton collector makes it a consistently appealing acquisition.
