Royal Doulton Figurine Mr Micawber HN2097
Mr. Micawber (HN2097) was designed by Leslie Harradine and issued by Royal Doulton from 1952 to 1967, standing 7.25 inches tall as part of the Dickens series. The subject is Wilkins Micawber from David Copperfield — Charles Dickens' incurable optimist, chronic debtor, and one of the most beloved comic characters in the English language. Harradine had been interpreting Dickens characters for Royal Doulton since the 1930s, and his feel for the material was second to none.
Micawber is a character who demands a certain physical bearing — the grandiloquent manner, the air of a man perpetually on the verge of something turning up — and Harradine captures it with the economy of a sculptor who understood that great characterisation in ceramic requires suggestion as much as detail. The figure presents Micawber as Dickens drew him: pompous, warm-hearted, and magnificently unsuited to the practical demands of life.
The Dickens series attracted collectors on both sides of the Atlantic throughout its production run, and Harradine's interpretations have remained the definitive ceramic treatments of these characters. HN2097 was in production for fifteen years before retirement in 1967, and examples in clean first-quality condition are consistently sought by Dickens collectors and Doulton specialists alike.
