Royal Doulton Figurine Neswboy HN2244

Sale price$165.00 CAD Regular price$200.00 CAD

Newsboy (HN2244) was designed by Mary Nicoll and issued by Royal Doulton from 1959 to 1965, standing 8.5 inches tall as part of the Street Vendor series. The subject is the newspaper boy — a fixture of twentieth-century British street life as recognisable in ceramic as he was on any corner of any city — rendered by Nicoll with the character and specificity that distinguished her best work in the occupational figure tradition.

Nicoll brought a particular gift for working-class character studies to the HN series, and the Newsboy sits comfortably alongside her other Street Vendor contributions. The figure captures the energy of a trade that was built on hustle and presence — the boy with his papers, his cap, and the unmistakable posture of someone who knows how to get attention on a busy pavement.

The production window closed in 1965 after just six years, and the Newsboy has been retired for six decades. Short-run Street Vendor figures from this mid-century period are consistently sought by collectors assembling the series, and Nicoll's name on the backstamp adds an additional layer of appeal for those who follow her work specifically.
