Royal Doulton Figurine New Companion HN2770

Sale price$75.00 CAD

New Companion (HN2770) was designed by W.K. Harper and issued by Royal Doulton from 1982 to 1985, standing 7.75 inches tall as part of the Golden Years series. The figure depicts an elderly woman in bonnet and shawl pausing from her market journey, a small puppy nestled in the basket beside her — the new companion of the title, and the quiet centre of the piece's considerable charm.

Harper brought a distinctive warmth and humanity to the Golden Years series, and New Companion is among its most appealing subjects. The pairing of an older woman and a small dog carries an emotional directness that needs no explanation, and Harper renders both with the kind of affectionate attention that makes the piece more than decorative. The purple, white and black colourway is rich and well-resolved, giving the figure strong visual presence despite its intimate scale.

Production closed in 1985 after just three years, making New Companion one of the shorter-run Golden Years figures and a genuine find in clean condition. The series as a whole has developed a loyal following among collectors drawn to Harper's elder character studies, and New Companion — with its combination of strong subject matter and brief production window — sits near the top of that list.
