Reverie HN2306, Royal Doulton Figurine
Royal Doulton Reverie HN2306 was modelled by Margaret (Peggy) Davies, the most prolific and celebrated sculptor in Royal Doulton's post-war history. Davies possessed an unrivalled gift for capturing the inner life of her subjects — not just their outward grace, but the quality of thought or feeling behind the pose — and Reverie is among the purest expressions of that gift. The title says everything: this is a figure lost in quiet contemplation, a moment of private stillness rendered in fine bone china.
Standing approximately 6¼ inches tall, Reverie presents a seated Victorian lady in a flowing peach gown with softly billowing white sleeves, reclined on a purple and white chaise in an attitude of elegant repose. Her gaze is turned inward, her pose relaxed without being informal — the very picture of a woman alone with her thoughts in a well-appointed drawing room. The painting is characteristically refined, with the warm peach of the dress playing beautifully against the deep tones of the upholstered chaise beneath her.
Reverie HN2306 was produced from 1964 to 1981, a seventeen-year run that ended over four decades ago. Peggy Davies figurines from this mid-century period have established themselves as the most consistently collected tier of the Royal Doulton catalogue, and seated compositions of this complexity — with a fully realised piece of furniture as an integral element of the design — represent some of the most technically demanding work her studio produced. Reverie is a piece that rewards close attention.
