Royal Doulton Figurine Richard the Lionheart HN3675
Richard the Lionheart (HN3675) was designed by Pauline Parsons and issued from 1995 to 2002, standing 10 inches tall. Parsons was one of Royal Doulton's most versatile late-twentieth-century modellers, equally at home with the delicate work of the Pretty Ladies and Impressions ranges as with the bold, armoured character studies of the historical figures series — and it is in the latter that Richard sits, alongside her Joan of Arc HN3681 and other commanding presences from English and European history.
Richard I — Coeur de Lion, King of England from 1189 — is one of the most recognisable figures in English medieval history, and the epithet that has followed him through eight centuries says everything about why he remains so compelling a subject. He was above all a warrior king, the embodiment of the crusading ideal, a man who spent the majority of his reign on campaign and who became, in death and legend, the standard against which English kingship was measured. Parsons rendered him in full armour and regalia, and at 10 inches the figure has the physical presence the subject demands.
The 1995–2002 production window gives HN3675 a seven-year run before retirement — long enough to have found its collecting audience, short enough that examples in excellent condition are not abundant. Historical and military character figures draw a distinct and loyal collecting community that pursues them independently of the broader Pretty Ladies market, and Richard commands consistent interest within that group.
