Royal Doulton Figurine Song of the Sea HN2729

Sale price$69.95 CAD Regular price$85.00 CAD

Song of the Sea (HN2729) was designed by William K. Harper and issued from 1982 to 1991, standing 7.25 inches tall. It belongs to Royal Doulton's Sea Characters series — the nautical character range that Harper developed alongside Mary Nicoll's earlier contributions, and which draws one of the most specifically focused and loyal collecting audiences in the HN range.

The composition is a figure group: an old fisherman in a blue sweater and white cap, seated with a young boy at his side, a shell held between them — the timeless image of an older man passing on the wonder and lore of the sea to the next generation. The "song of the sea" of the title is the sound of the ocean heard in the shell, and Harper captured the moment with the warmth and storytelling clarity that characterised his best character work. It is a piece with genuine emotional resonance — not simply a portrait of a man, but a scene with a relationship and a moment at its centre.

The nine-year production run, the figure group format, and the cross-appeal of the nautical and intergenerational subject all contribute to Song of the Sea's enduring collector interest. Harper's Sea Characters draw buyers who pursue the series as a set, and this is one of the stronger individual subjects within it — a piece that rewards looking at carefully rather than simply reading from across the room.
