Royal Doulton Figurine St George HN2051
Royal Doulton St. George HN2051 was modelled by Margaret (Peggy) Davies, the most prolific and celebrated sculptor in Royal Doulton's modern history. Davies was drawn above all else to the grand, technically demanding compositions that pushed the boundaries of what fine bone china could express — and by her own account, St. George was among the pieces she was most proud of. The biographer of her career notes it among her first loves alongside The Broken Lance, both released before 1962 and both representing the ambitious scale and historical ambition that defined her finest work.
Standing 7½ inches tall, St. George is presented astride his rearing white horse, lance raised, as he drives the dragon beneath him into defeat. The composition captures the full drama of the legend — horse, knight, and dragon locked in a single moment of decisive combat — rendered in rich tones of white, turquoise, and green, with the hand-painted detailing that Royal Doulton's decorators reserved for their most prestigious pieces. As a technical achievement in bone china, the multi-figure group with its rearing horse and writhing dragon is extraordinary — the kind of composition that tests the limits of the medium and rewards close examination from every angle.
St. George HN2051 was produced from 1950 to 1985, a thirty-five year run that reflects both the enduring popularity of the subject and the consistency of demand across generations of collectors. Part of Royal Doulton's Men of History series, it appeals not only to figurine collectors but to those drawn to Arthurian and medieval English legend, to equestrian subjects, and to the prestige tier of the Peggy Davies catalogue. Pieces of this scale and complexity in excellent condition are increasingly difficult to find undamaged — the rearing horse, extended lance, and dragon are all points of vulnerability — making first-quality examples genuinely sought after.
