Royal Doulton Figurine Stan Laurel HN2774
Stan Laurel (HN2774) was designed by William K. Harper and issued in 1990 as part of Royal Doulton's Classic Entertainers series, in a worldwide limited edition of 9,500 numbered pieces. Standing approximately 9.25 inches tall, it is the companion piece to Oliver Hardy HN2775, issued in the same edition — the two figures conceived as a pair and numbered identically, so that collectors could display them as the duo that made them famous.
Harper gave Stan the look that is instantly recognisable to anyone who has ever seen a Laurel and Hardy film: the bowler hat, the ill-fitting suit, the soft-eyed expression of complete and serene bafflement that was Stan's greatest comic gift. He was the innocent in perpetual collision with a world that refused to behave as expected, and Harper captured that quality — the gentle, slightly crumpled figure whose response to any disaster was to scratch his head and look puzzled, as if the universe had simply done something unreasonable again.
The Classic Entertainers series brought together a small group of twentieth-century comedy legends — Chaplin, Groucho Marx, and the Laurel and Hardy pair — under Harper's hand, and the series has a loyal and dedicated following among both Royal Doulton collectors and the much larger community of Laurel and Hardy enthusiasts worldwide. Stan Laurel sells steadily as a standalone piece, and draws strong interest when offered alongside Oliver Hardy.
