Royal Doulton Figurine The Lifeboatman HN2764

Sale price$150.00 CAD

The Lifeboatman (HN2764) was designed by W.K. Harper and issued by Royal Doulton from 1987 to 1991, standing 9.25 inches tall as part of the Sea Characters series. Harper presents the figure in the unmistakable working dress of the lifeboat service — yellow oilskins against the elements, life ring in one hand, telescope in the other — the posture of a man who goes out in weather that drives everyone else indoors.

The Sea Characters series was Harper's particular domain, and The Lifeboatman sits among its most recognisable subjects. Where many of the nautical figures celebrate maritime tradition or seafaring romance, this one is grounded in something more immediate — the volunteer tradition of coastal rescue that has defined Britain's relationship with the sea for centuries. Harper captures that sense of purpose without sentimentality, the figure solid and purposeful rather than decorative.

The production window closed in 1991 after just four years, and the piece has been retired ever since. Among collectors who focus on the Sea Characters range, The Lifeboatman is one of the more consistently sought subjects — practical, characterful, and recognisably British in the best Doulton tradition.
