Uriah Heep comes from David Copperfield (1850), where he serves as the novel's primary villain — a clerk who constructs an elaborate performance of humility and self-abasement while scheming systematically against everyone around him. His name has passed so thoroughly into the English language that "Uriah Heep" is now a synonym for a particular kind of snivelling, ingratiating villainy, and Dickens himself regarded the character as one of his finest creations.
