Royal Doulton Figurine Wayfarer HN2362

Sale price$59.95 CAD Regular price$75.00 CAD

Wayfarer (HN2362) was designed by Mary Nicoll and issued from 1970 to 1976, standing 5.5 inches tall. It belongs to the Sea Characters series and presents one of Nicoll's most quietly accomplished character studies: a seated elderly man at rest with his pipe and his flagon, lost in whatever thought a man of the sea and the road finds when he finally sits down.

The word wayfarer carries its own weight — the traveller who moves through the world under his own steam, beholden to no fixed timetable, carrying everything he needs. Nicoll understood this subject type deeply; she had modelled the old and the weathered and the self-sufficient throughout her career at Doulton, and her seated characters in particular reward looking at carefully. The green, grey and brown palette suits the subject exactly — there is nothing gaudy here, nothing that doesn't belong — and the compact 5.5-inch scale means the figure sits naturally in any space without demanding attention it doesn't earn.

The six-year production window keeps clean examples in demand among Sea Characters series collectors and Nicoll enthusiasts alike. It is one of those pieces that appears modest at first and reveals more the longer you look — which is precisely the quality that makes it hold its value.
