Royal Doulton Gloire de Dijon Jug, Cobalt Blue Rose & Gilt, Pattern
This handsome globular jug was produced at Royal Doulton's Burslem factory in the Edwardian period, bearing the Royal Doulton England backstamp and the named pattern designation Gloire de Dijon — a reference to the celebrated climbing rose variety whose full-petalled blooms are depicted on the body. Pattern number A9610 confirms this as a documented Doulton production, making it readily identifiable to collectors researching this specific decoration. It is 6.5" tall and 5.5" wide.
The jug presents a rounded body with a scalloped gilt rim and shaped handle finished in cobalt and gold. The upper section carries dense gilt trailing vine on a deep cobalt ground, transitioning to the mottled buff and white body where large cobalt blue rose blooms are painted with soft, impressionistic brushwork. The contrast between the formal gilt upper section and the naturalistic floral body is a hallmark of Doulton Burslem's most successful decorative formula of this period.
This jug is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. The gilding on the rim and handle remains bright and the rose decoration is vivid and unfaded. Named pattern Doulton pieces with confirmed pattern numbers are more readily sought by collectors than anonymous floral work, as they can be researched, documented and matched to related pieces in the same series.
