Royal Doulton Hand Painted Winter Scene Vase
Royal Doulton Lambeth hand-painted winter scene vase, circa 1900-1918, standing 3.5" tall. This charming vase features an individually hand-painted winter landscape scene executed by one of the talented artists working at the Lambeth studio in London. The piece showcases the exceptional hand-painted artistry that characterized Doulton Lambeth's art pottery during the Edwardian era.
This vase was produced at the original Doulton pottery established by John Doulton in 1815 in the Lambeth district of London. The Lambeth studio specialized in artistic pottery with individual hand-decorated pieces, employing talented artists who created unique works on salt-glazed stoneware and earthenware bodies. From the early 1870s onward, Sir Henry Doulton engaged skilled artists to decorate an extensive variety of art pottery including vases, with each piece bearing the distinctive marks and signatures of the Lambeth studio.
The hand-painted winter scene demonstrates the skilled brushwork of Lambeth's artist-decorators, who painted English countryside landscapes, seasonal vignettes, and pastoral scenes directly onto the pottery. Unlike the transfer-printed wares produced elsewhere, these were truly hand-painted pieces where each artist created individual interpretations of winter landscapes—snow-covered fields, bare trees, cottages with smoking chimneys, and frozen streams. The Lambeth artists had considerable freedom to express their talents, which benefited both the artists and the studio's reputation.
The compact 3.5" size made these vases popular as cabinet pieces or for displaying small flower arrangements during the Edwardian period. Each piece is marked with Doulton Lambeth impressed stamps and may include artist monograms identifying the decorator. These hand-painted Lambeth pieces represent the studio pottery tradition that made Doulton internationally famous, with each vase being essentially a one-of-a-kind artwork.
