Royal Doulton Holbein Ware Vase, Goats in Sunset Landscape, England c.1902–1930

Sale price$375.00 CAD

This Royal Doulton Holbein Ware vase was produced at the Burslem factory in the early twentieth century, bearing the Royal Doulton England backstamp in green alongside the distinctive Holbein Ware secondary mark. Holbein Ware represents one of Doulton's less commonly encountered decorative lines, characterized by its warm amber and russet ground and richly painterly slip-decorated subjects — a departure from the higher-gloss Kingsware produced in the same period and today somewhat underrepresented in the market relative to its quality.

Standing 6 inches tall, the vase is formed as a squat pilgrim flask with twin gilt loop handles and a slightly frilled gilt neck rim. The principal panel depicts four goats in a pastoral sunset landscape, the animals individually characterized against a warm ground of amber, russet, and deep orange with trees and open sky behind them. The painting is executed with genuine care — the goats are rendered with specificity rather than as generic decorative motifs, and the warm tonal range of the Holbein ground complements the subject particularly well.

Holbein Ware vases of this quality and subject matter appear infrequently on the market and attract collectors of Doulton decorative wares as well as buyers drawn to the animal painting tradition at Burslem. The goat subject, the richness of the ground colour, and the compact displayable form make this an appealing example of an underappreciated Doulton line.

Condition is very good. Some light crazing is present on the base only and does not affect the decorated surface. A minor paint scratch is noted to the reverse. Gilding on the handles and neck is intact.
