Royal Doulton Lambeth Florence Barlow Bird Vase
Royal Doulton Lambeth stoneware vase by Florence Barlow, dated 1884. This exquisite art pottery piece features Florence's signature pâte-sur-pâte bird studies, with beautifully hand-painted images of birds rendered in her characteristic meticulous detail against panels on a mottled stoneware body. Each piece is uniquely decorated with birds - her specialty subject - often accompanied by flowers, wheat, or natural foliage. It is 10" tall.
Florence Barlow (1851-1909) was one of the most sought-after artists at Doulton Lambeth, working there from 1873 to 1909 for an impressive 36-year career. She was part of the renowned Barlow family of artists - along with her sister Hannah and brother Arthur - who were among the first artists engaged by Henry Doulton at the Lambeth studio in the 1870s. When Doulton introduced pâte-sur-pâte wares in 1878, Florence mastered this demanding technique. The sisters agreed that Florence would specialize in birds while Hannah focused on other animals. Florence exhibited her work internationally at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition (1876), the Royal Academy (1884-1885), and the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition (1904).
Florence marked all her pieces with her distinctive "FEB" or "FB" monogram, different from her sister's mark. These vases were hand-crafted at the Doulton Lambeth studio in London, often in collaboration with assistant artists who created the decorative borders and glazed bands. Each piece is individually signed, numbered, and dated.
Florence Barlow's bird studies are increasingly appreciated by collectors for their superb detail, artistic merit, and historical significance as examples of Victorian art pottery. Her works represent an important period when women artists were gaining recognition in the decorative arts. Values for Florence Barlow vases typically range from £800 to £2,000+ depending on size, condition, complexity of decoration, and collaborating artists.
