The Doulton pottery was established in 1815 by John Doulton in the Lambeth district of London, initially producing utilitarian salt-glazed stoneware including bottles, chemical vessels, and sanitary pipes. In the early 1860s, Henry Doulton (son of the founder) began experimenting with decorative art pottery and in 1871 opened the Lambeth Studio in partnership with the Lambeth School of Art. This revolutionary collaboration employed talented young artists, mainly women, to create individual hand-decorated pieces that became the first noteworthy example of artist-pottery in England. Each piece was unique, with artists applying incised sgraffito designs, pâte-sur-pâte decoration, applied rosettes and beadwork, and hand-painted glazes in rich blues, browns, greens, and earth tones
