Royal Doulton Lambeth Lord Nelson Mug

This Royal Doulton Lambeth stoneware mug is a fine early commemorative piece honouring Vice Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson, Britain's greatest naval hero and the man whose victory at Trafalgar in October 1805 secured British naval supremacy for a century. The mug bears a boldly modelled portrait medallion of Nelson in profile — rendered in the olive and sage green tones characteristic of Lambeth stoneware — framed by rope-twist borders entirely appropriate to a naval subject. The band around the base carries the famous signal from Trafalgar: "England Expects Every Man Will Do His Duty," Nelson's immortal words hoisted from HMS Victory in the moments before the battle commenced. Flanking the portrait, naval battle scenes complete a design of considerable ambition and patriotic feeling.

Royal Doulton's Lambeth studio produced stoneware of this character from the mid-nineteenth century through the early twentieth, and Nelson commemoratives were among the most enduring subjects in their repertoire — issued and reissued to meet persistent demand from a public that never tired of honouring Trafalgar's hero. The cobalt blue rim and brown base banding against the sage green relief work is a distinctively Lambeth palette, immediately recognisable to collectors of early Doulton and wholly different in character from the later Burslem bone china productions. At 3.5 inches this is a compact and well-proportioned piece, the relief modelling crisp and the inscription fully legible.

Early Doulton Lambeth stoneware has attracted strong and sustained collector interest precisely because it represents a different tradition from the figurines and tableware that dominate the Doulton market — utilitarian in origin, artisanal in execution, and carrying the weight of the Lambeth studio's considerable artistic reputation. Nelson subjects within that tradition are among the most eagerly sought, combining the appeal of early Doulton with one of the great subjects in British commemorative ceramics. A piece of this quality, with crisp relief and strong colour, is not commonly encountered.
